FACSIMILÉ DU SPÉCIMEN DE 1783 D’UNE FONDERIE TYPOGRAPHIQUE FRANÇAISE MÉCONNUE.

Il s’agit de la première reproduction de ce spécimen rarissime. Chacune des 112 pages a été scannée en très haute résolution sur un exemplaire original, puis nettoyée avec soin mais sans retouche, pour restituer l’exactitude de l’imprimé. Le catalogue de ce fondeur normand contient la vaste palette des polices les plus caractéristiques du XVIIIe siècle. La plupart des caractères s’y avèrent issus de l’atelier d’un important graveur parisien, qui est, lui aussi, étonnamment passé sous les radars de l’histoire jusqu’ici. L’hésitation de leurs dessins entre humanité et technicité nous les fera percevoir en écho à la création d’aujourd’hui.
La note introductive permettra au spécialiste de resituer ces exemples, qu’il pourra confronter à ses propres études. L’amateur pourra quant à lui mieux apprécier ce petit trésor graphique, tout à la fois exemplaire et méconnu.
La dorure qui décore la couverture est un encadrement créé dans le goût de l’époque, à partir d’une dizaine de fleurons du facsimilé.

FACSIMILE OF THE 1783 SPECIMEN OF AN UNKNOWN FRENCH TYPEFOUNDER.

It is the first time this scarce French provincial specimen is reproduced. Each of the 112 page was scanned in very high resolution on an original copy, then carefully cleaned, though without touch-up, to restore the truth of the print. This catalog displays the most significant ranges of very distinctive 18th century’s typefonts. Most of its characters turn out to originate from a noteworthy Parisian engraver’s workshop that has also stangely escaped historians’ scrutiny so far. The hesitancy of their features between humanity and technicality happen to echo today’s design.
The introductory note will allow the type-specialist to contextualize these samples, confront them with his own studies, while the amateur will better understand and enjoy this graphic treasure trove, as more remarkable as it has been disregarded.
The gilded border decorating the front cover page has been created à la mode of the time, from about ten of the facsimile’s flowers.
