FACSIMILÉ DU SPÉCIMEN DE 1783 D’UNE FONDERIE TYPOGRAPHIQUE FRANÇAISE MÉCONNUE.

Il s’agit de la pre­mière repro­duc­tion de ce spécimen raris­sime. Chacune des 112 pages a été scan­née en très haute réso­lu­tion sur un exem­plaire ori­gi­nal, puis net­toyée avec soin mais sans retouche, pour res­ti­tuer l’exactitude de l’imprimé. Le cata­logue de ce fon­deur nor­mand contient la vaste palette des polices les plus caractéristiques du XVIIIe siècle. La plu­part des caractères s’y avèrent issus de l’atelier d’un impor­tant gra­veur pari­sien, qui est, lui aus­si, étonnamment passé sous les radars de l’histoire jusqu’ici. L’hésitation de leurs des­sins entre huma­nité et tech­ni­cité nous les fera per­ce­voir en écho à la création d’aujourd’hui.
La note intro­duc­tive per­met­tra au spé­cia­liste de resi­tuer ces exemples, qu’il pour­ra confron­ter à ses propres études. L’amateur pour­ra quant à lui mieux appré­cier ce petit tré­sor gra­phique, tout à la fois exem­plaire et méconnu.
La dorure qui décore la cou­ver­ture est un enca­dre­ment créé dans le goût de l’époque, à par­tir d’une dizaine de fleu­rons du facsimilé.

FACSIMILE OF THE 1783 SPECIMEN OF AN UNKNOWN FRENCH TYPEFOUNDER.

It is the first time this scarce French pro­vin­cial spe­ci­men is repro­du­ced. Each of the 112 page was scan­ned in very high reso­lu­tion on an ori­gi­nal copy, then care­ful­ly clea­ned, though without touch-up, to res­tore the truth of the print. This cata­log dis­plays the most signi­fi­cant ranges of very dis­tinc­tive 18th century’s type­fonts. Most of its cha­rac­ters turn out to ori­gi­nate from a note­wor­thy Parisian engraver’s work­shop that has also stan­ge­ly esca­ped his­to­rians’ scru­ti­ny so far. The hesi­tan­cy of their fea­tures bet­ween huma­ni­ty and tech­ni­ca­li­ty hap­pen to echo today’s design.
The intro­duc­to­ry note will allow the type-spe­cia­list to contex­tua­lize these samples, confront them with his own stu­dies, while the ama­teur will bet­ter unders­tand and enjoy this gra­phic trea­sure trove, as more remar­kable as it has been disregarded.
The gil­ded bor­der deco­ra­ting the front cover page has been crea­ted à la mode of the time, from about ten of the facsimile’s flowers.
